What is Traditional Chinese Medicine?
If you’ve heard of acupuncture, cupping (ventosa), or herbal tea for "sipon" and wondered what ties it all together, that’s Traditional Chinese Medicine, or TCM. It’s one of the world’s oldest systems of health practice, and today it’s often used as a traditional, complementary approach alongside modern medical care.

A different way of looking at health
TCM looks at the body as a whole, connected system. Rather than focusing on a single symptom in isolation, it considers your energy, sleep, digestion, and overall balance together. In TCM, health is understood as the smooth, steady flow of qi (pronounced "chee," your body’s vital energy) and other vital substances through pathways called meridians and collaterals. When that flow is blocked or uneven, the vital organs and the rest of the body are affected. This may decrease the body’s ability to fight external factors or lead to internal dysfunction. This may manifest in many ways such as pain, tiredness, poor sleep, or other everyday discomforts.
This is a different framework from Western medicine, which explains the body through anatomy, biochemistry, and diagnostic testing. Neither replaces the other; at MeridianHealth, they are presented as complementary approaches to discuss during a consultation.
The main therapies under the TCM umbrella
- •Acupuncture: fine, sterile needles placed at selected points.
- •Cupping (ventosa): round cups used to create suction on the skin.
- •Moxibustion: gentle warmth applied near the skin, traditionally used for areas that feel worse with cold.
- •Gua sha: smooth, guided scraping strokes used in Traditional Chinese Medicine.
- •Herbal medicine: formulas made from plants, roots, minerals, and other substances, used in TCM theory to help support the body’s internal balance. MeridianHealth does not sell, prescribe, or dispense herbs.
Many patients use these therapies for everyday concerns like muscle and joint discomfort, stress, poor sleep, and general recovery.
Why we pair it with modern medicine
Medical consultations and TCM sessions are available at the clinic.
Your consultation can cover medical assessment and traditional options where appropriate.
What a first visit looks like
You’ll start with a real conversation about your history, lifestyle, and goals, not just a quick chart check. From there, our doctor will recommend what’s appropriate for you, whether that’s a therapy, a referral, or simply some advice. Walk-ins are welcome, but booking ahead is better - it holds your slot and saves you the wait.
Is TCM right for you?
TCM at MeridianHealth is presented as a traditional, complementary approach alongside medical care, but it isn’t a substitute for medical diagnosis or emergency care. If something feels urgent or serious, please see a doctor right away.
